Your soft oral tissues, including the gums, tongue and cheeks, can be injured by falls, sports-related injuries, scalding liquids or accidental bites. Injury may also occur when debris becomes lodged below the gum line. In some cases, these injuries can lead to painful and potentially serious abscesses. An abscess is a pus-filled sac caused by an infection and requires immediate treatment by our dentist in order to prevent further damage from occurring and ensure that infection is eliminated.

When you receive any injury to the soft oral tissues of your mouth you should immediately rinse the area with diluted saltwater. Any visible debris in your mouth should be cleared away as soon as possible. Bleeding can typically be controlled by pressing a clean, damp cloth or other material to the area for 10-15 minutes. If this does not stop the bleeding, we recommend that you go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Debris lodged beneath the gum line can sometimes be gently worked out with dental floss or a toothpick, but if this cannot be easily accomplished you should contact our office and make a dental appointment. Our dentist will be able to help remove the debris and prevent further damage and infection.
